The University of the Philippines Alumni Association of Greater Los Angeles (UPAAGLA) recently signed up new members during a merienda cena mixer, ‘Spring Fling’, held at the residence of vice president and membership chair Nati Matitu (Nursing) at her residence in North Hills.

The new recruits are Geraldine Inigo (Philosophy) of Sta. Ana, Marie Kramerer (Arts andScience) of Simi Valley and Rowena Khan (Arts and Science) of Los Angeles.

Also from Los Angeles are Joji Luna (Foreign Service) and Michael Melendres (Statistics).

Other new members are Arthur Ortega (Economics) of Torrance, Ariel Presbitero (Social Work) of Los Angeles, Dr. Federico Quevedo and  Dr. Eduardita Vicencio of Hermosa Beach and Jerome Viray of Simi Valley.

According to UPAAGLA PRESIDENT Dr. Arnel Joaquin, “the new members will certainly invigorate the organization and ensure its continuity in years to come.”

Joaquin lauded the efforts of vice president Yvee Tadeo” who spearheaded the project and the officers and board members who unselfishly contributed resources and time to make this membership drive a resounding success.”

A highlight of the event was a musical presentation featuring Sal Malaqui, a music alumnus and a 20-year member of the Los Angeles Opera ensemble, soprano Annie Nepomuceno and the Harana Men’s Chorus.

Raffle prizes and a UP trivia contest also contributed to the fun.

The new members will be formally welcomed along with the incoming set of officers and board members during induction rites slated for September 2017.###

UP Halalan 2016

The University of the Philippines, in partnership with ABS-CBN Corporation, GMA Network, and CNN Philippines, has launched the UP sa Halalan 2016 project to promote clean, honest and empowering elections in the Philippines in May 2016.

Pursuant to these agreements, a website (http://halalan.up.edu.ph) was developed to serve as a platform for UP to:

  • Facilitate voter education by making election-related data accessible to the faculty, staff, students, alumni and the general public;
  • Disseminate relevant information about the candidates, plus election-related research findings and analyses by UP-based experts in a manner that is meaningful and comprehensible to various audiences; and
  • Ensure that election-related initiatives, such as the fact check project, reach the widest audience possible through the use of both traditional and new media.
